The one secret to selling more in a saturated market without reducing your prices

Last week, I was on a call with a client who sells cosmetics

I ended the call by saying “when times get tough, the strong get stronger and the weak die. Which one will you be?”

when ever i say this to client's Some of them get offended by this.

Well, as the saying goes, I don’t make the rules, I just report them.

During prosperity, it’s easy to make more money because the economic pie is growing. All you have to do is have a piece of that growing pie and you will do well.

But during a downturn, the economic pie is shrinking. That means that by definition, the only way to make money is to take market share away from your competitors.

So how do you take market share away from competitors when they are bigger, better-funded, and can afford to spend more money than you to acquire a customer?

Well, you can try to compete head-to-head with better marketing, superior products, and better customer service. But hey, you should always be doing that anyway.

So here’s a another strategy: instead of trying to be #1 in a given category, create products where you are in a CATEGORY OF ONE. Then you have no competition.

If you look at the top-selling products that have ever sold, most of them are in a Category of One. And if you look at many of the great companies that were started during recessions (like Disney, Microsoft, AirBnB, etc.), they were also in a Category of One.
